Location: Moodabidri, Coastal Karnataka, India
A renovation project for Dr.Krishnamohan Prabhu’s residence in the historically renown coastal town of Moodbidri. The client wanted to maintain the traditional looks of Mangalore tiled house with its cool interiors using wooden false ceiling. The project involved removal of a few inner walls to make spacious rooms, the roof was re-worked by reusing the existing rafters, joists and planks. Entrance courtyard was added with a passage linking to the hospital nearby and two more private courtyards were introduced for the bedrooms. External walls were built with exposed laterite masonry, interior walls were plastered for better reflective light.
White foam sheets were sandwiched as false ceiling material between the rafters and the battens, glued with water proof adhesive. Foam sheets provide excellent thermal insulation and water proofing in the event of damage to Mangalore tiles.
Steel I-beams were used to retain the old grid of the rafters but to span a larger space. A timber log was erected at the centre of the living and dining room to support an I-beam in the living room with planks cantilevered out of the log forming a display shelf adding to the rustic feature of the residence. A steep roofed guest room was introduced in the first floor with a dormer window for better light and ventilation in the attic overlooking the living room.

I liked your plans of farmhouse. I also need to plan a (retreat) new house in my village at Surinje suiting to the environment of that area. The house should be simple, open with outside verandha. Lots of lights. One large living room, large Bed room cum study, Pooja room and Kitchen with Dining on ground floor. Two Bed rooms on top. Space is not a constraint.
Existing house needs to be dismantled and rebuild from foundation. Project to kick start in March 2012. Construction to start by Sept next year.

I went through your website regarding the residential building construction and I am impressed with the photos posted on your website. I am in the process of concluding a land purchase deal in Mangalore (in Kinnigoli) where I am planning to construct a modern house for my daughter which needs to be more of modern style with bricks and more of glasses to get more light. A well or bore well with boundary wall and a gate and the landscaping is also required if done by your company.
